This chapter discusses the world of sports in the future. It discusses not only the future of sports organizations, but also the future of the fans and those who present the sporting events.

The chapter discusses that sports are going into hyperdrive which is pushing more of the individual sports such as UFC and sports like the x games. While these individual sports are on the rise, I don’t believe that the major team sports will ever be passed by these. The book also discusses the world of e-sports and how that market is coming up.

“Commodification of sports” refers to how the world of sports is now bought and sold and has become one of the largest businesses in the world. The world of sports brings in as well as pays out billions of dollars every year.

Sports are no longer seen as just for the viewers entertainment. Corporations such as the MLB, NBA and the NCAA make money off out their athletes when fans watch the games and buy tickets and merchandise. The organizations also profit off of the advertising and spend tons of money on it as well. This has turned sports into a massive business and no longer just for the love of the game.

Chapter 15

The most interesting part of chapter 15 was the section on sports video games.  Video games are an enormous business and continue to grow everyday.  With the advances in technology the creators of these games have been able to make them as realistic as possible.  The games have high quality graphics and use the real players from the actual sports world.  They can even make the players movements look how they do in real life.  Sports video games really help the sports world by allowing fans to interact with their favorite players and teams through the games.  The games are also a way to boost popularity of a player, team, or sport.  Every sports video game has a player on the cover of the game which can lead to that player or their team having an increased popularity through the game.  The growing technology has allowed fans to heavily interact with their favorite teams and players.  The other side of sports gaming is the fantasy side of sports.  With this the players of the fantasy sports interact with players and teams by investing money in them and hoping to win and receive the reward.  Fantasy sports are very popular and don’t necessarily have to involve money.  The world of sports gaming is a very popular field and will continue to grow over time.

Politics and sports have always been seen as two opposite things that should not be mixed.  But many athletes, mostly professional, have used their platform as a well-known figure to express their own views and opinions on political topics that do not deal with sports.  One of the biggest political issues in sports that has become somewhat of a political movement is the NFL players that choose not to stand during the national anthem and other athletes trying to make a push for equality.  The athletes use their widely seen platform to get their cause out to the public.  But the athletes bring in politics from outside the sports world and the politics inside their sport.  Colin Kaepernick used his platform in the NFL to fight fro equality inside and outside of the NFL.  People say that politics should not be inside of sports but the reality is that it is inevitable to keep the two apart.

Chapter 7 is all about ethnicity and race in the sports world.  Every sport has its own issues when discussing race, ethnicity, and color barriers.  One of the most talked about examples of that is dealing with baseball.  Until Jackie Robinson in 1947, there were no black baseball players in the major leagues.  There were separate leagues fro the black players but it was a completely different league.  And every sport has someone who broke the color barrier like Jackie Robinson.  Football had Fritz Pollard and Bobby Marshall.  Basketball had Earl Lloyd.  Hockey had Willie O’Ree.

Many sports icons have helped make progress when dealing with race and ethnicity in sports like Jackie Robinson, Muhammed Ali, and Michael Jordan.  Diversity in sports has vastly improved over the years and has seen huge increases in other races.  There are still paces where diversity can improve.  Though there are many athletes of other races, a majority of coaches in all sports are white.  This is an area where diversity can improve, but it has come a long way.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 focuses on the multiple outlets that sports media reaches its fans and viewers.  With today’s technology the fans and viewers are constantly surrounded by the latest and most up to date news in the sports world.  Besides social media one of the most common ways to get sports news is through Television.  Sports have majority of the top rated and most watched Television programs of all time. The chapter also shows how the traditional media such as the networks that broadcast sporting events and news still dominates the new media.  Social media is the fastest way to receive the latest in sports news with Instagram, Twitter and all the other forms of social media.

Chapter 5: Sports and Mythology

Chapter 5 shows the ways the mythology is present in sports and how fans respect and perceive these myths.  Baseball and Cooperstown is the big example the book uses when showing some of the myths that are present in sports.  Cooperstown is the place where baseball began and now it is known as the place where its best players will be remembered forever in the Hall of Fame.  Cooperstown is a very well known place and people from all over the country come to see the baseball Hall of Fame.  The chapter also discusses how many fans look at certain players as “larger than life” figures.  They see them as heroes and legends.  The book also talks about how labeling a player as a hero can take a bad turn if that player makes a mistake or gets in trouble.  The example the author uses is Michael Vick and how he acted in illegal dog fighting.  His image after that went from hero to villain.
